HNC in Social Care

DAY RELEASE

Background

SIRCC - The Scottish Institute for Residential Child Care - is funded by the Scottish Executive - to provide training for residential care workers. This is one way to ensure better quality care for children and young people who are vulnerable and in need.

The HNC in Social Care...

Is a nationally recognised qualification for social care workers from all client groups. The HNC course is generic, but this one will focus on residential child care issues, since to gain a free SIRCC place you need to be currently working in residential child care.

Content

You will study a variety of subjects, a selection of which includes; social policy, psychology, sociology, abuse and challenging behaviour, health and safety, discrimination and values in social care, managing relationships and care programming.

Timescales

We hope to start the next Day Release course at Langside College sometime between August 2001 and January 2002 at the very latest, depending on the number of applications. The course will last 12 months if you are currently undertaking or already have and SVQ in care, or 15 monnths if you want to study HNC only. You will be expected to attend college one full day per week. We can also provide other 'locally based' HNC's where Langside staff will travel to you from January 2002. If as an employer you are interested in this provision for your staff, please contact us.

What support and help is available?

It may be some time since you did any formal study and are lacking in confidence - despite your keen interest in care...if so, the SIRCC lecturing staff will provide tutorial support and guidance to suit individual learners. In addition the College has a special learning support section which is available to all students.

What next?

If interested, please apply by contacting us at the address given. On receipt of your completed application form, we will invite you for interview.
