What is
it?
The Strathclyde Centre in Gender Studies aims to stimulate research
with a gender dimension within the University of Strathclyde as well as
to take part in collaborative projects with scholars and activists in Scotland,
Great Britain and internationally.
Where is it?
SCIGS is nested in the History Department at the University of Strathclyde,
McCance Building, 16 Richmond St., Glasgow G1 1XQ, and can be reached
by e-mailing our Director, eileen.yeo@strath.ac.uk
What is it doing?
SCIGS
- Has produced a Register of Research with a gender dimension
at Strathclyde.
- Has started a Reading Group for people who wish
friendly but critical feedback to texts they want to publish. Please
contact Eileen Yeo to join.
- New Migration Project:
The workshops on Migration Stories last year have developed into a Scottish Migration
Archives Network which aims to create new-style archives registering the rich experience of migrants
to Scotland. The Network is composed of academics, artists, curators and activists and has been
given a grant by the Scottish Arts Council to begin its work. The Archives Network will be
both electronic and physical and will support reseach and artistic projects.
- Works Closely with Womens History Scotland
whose next Conference, 'Gender, Politics
and Citizenship: Scotland and Beyond'’ will take place on Saturday
29 Oct. 2005, in the Collins Suite. Click for Programme
- Has Helped create a Biographical
Dictionary of Scottish Women, with over 800 entries,
now in production at Edinburgh University Press. SCIGS kick-started
funding with grants from the Principal's Strategic Fund and Strathmartine
Trust, and the project was also adopted by the Scottish Executives Equality Unit.
- Has Contributed to Gender
in Scottish History, 1700 to the Present, in press now at EUP,
edited by SCIGS Director Eileen Yeo together with Profs. Lynn Abrams,
Eleanor Gordon and Debbi Simonton. To appear in Feb. 2006
- Is Hosting two visiting research fellows
this year. Anita Shah Lakyary is a local government officer
from Sindh, Pakistan and is the anchorwoman of a weekly television news
show, visiting on a Charles Wallace Scholarship. She has already been
advising groups in Sheffield and Manchester about setting up a radio
station here. Miklos Hadas is Prof. of Sociology and co-director
of the Centre for Gender and Culture of the Corvinus University of Budapest.
On an Erasmus Fellowship, he will be giving a public lecture on Masculinity
and Sport and will keynote a Symposium on Masculinity for researchers,
including especially postgraduates, in February.
