The University of Strathclyde
Afro-Caribbean Society was started in the 1998/99 academic year. So 2001/2002 is our fourth
year of existence. Despite this young age we are a very dynamic society!
Membership is open to all students of the University of Strathclyde
regardless of ethnicity. It is a fantastic opportunity to learn not only about
Afro-Caribbean cultures, but all the cultures represented in the student body.
In the past, we have been able to organise a wide range of events and
activities. Here are some highlights:
- 5-aside football tournament (for both boys and
girls) that was a huge success ... the last winners (the Spanish team)
enjoyed their prize of £50 and a special trophy.
- A hugely enjoyable skiing trip to Aviemore in
the north of Scotland with the Malaysian society.
- A trip to Aberdeen for the weekend to visit
the Afro-Caribbean Society in Aberdeen ... and a reciprocal visit from
them.
- The multi-cultural composition of the society
made it even more special. We had members from different nationalities,
e.g. Spanish, French, Scottish, Irish .. etc. in addition to the African
and Caribbean nationalities e.g. South Africa, Zimbabwe, Barbados, Jamaica
just to name a few.
- Membership of more than 60..
- The regular music nights or soul sessions in
the Union and sometimes in the student residences.
- Sponsored talks and cheese and wine sessions,
e.g. STA travel and Haggis Backpackers talk, where a lot of people got
really good deals in ticket prices for traveling around the UK and overseas.
- Collaboration with other societies, bodies and
individuals outside the university gave the society a wealth of contacts.
