Gifts to the Alumni Fund make a direct contribution to the lives of current and future Strathclyde students by providing resources for: Undergraduate Scholarships to enable highly qualified students from less advantaged backgrounds to study at Strathclyde; Teaching & Learning Resources such as library books and computers; Sports, Society & Culture to support the extra-curricular activities that add greatly to the student experience.
Undergraduate Scholarships
Strathclyde has a proud tradition of educating all who achieve its academic entry standard, regardless of their background.
Launched in 1996, the Undergraduate Scholarships programme is funded by gifts from alumni and provides scholarships of £1,250 per year to academically gifted students from disadvantaged areas in Glasgow and the west of Scotland.
As the cost of higher education rises, students whose parents are less able to support them financially often face the greatest hardship. Fear of significant debt is also a disproportionate disincentive to students from lower income backgrounds. The proportion of students from some of these areas going on to university is below 5%, compared with a national average in excess of 30%. The award of a scholarship does not solve all of their financial problems but it does provide a level of financial stability crucial to the decision to take up a place and to complete a degree.
From small beginnings in 1996 we have grown the programme to the point where we now admit more than 20 new scholars each year. With your support we will be able to ensure this continues and that more students will benefit in future.
Teaching & Learning Resources
The quality of a student's time at university is largely determined by their experience in the classroom and lecture theatre, the quality of the teaching and the availability of books, computers and other learning resources.
Strathclyde is committed to excellence and the Alumni Fund is supporting improvements in the teaching & learning infrastructure through awards to establish a library endowment and to help equip pioneering new interactive teaching facilities. Until recently, the University Library was almost unique among its peers in having no library endowment. Thanks to the generosity of alumni and friends an excellent start has been made. Endowment income is vital to the future of the library by providing a reliable income stream to invest in books and other learning materials.
Sports, Society & Culture
At Strathclyde we recognise that coming to university is not just about getting a degree, it should also be fulfilling in a much broader sense. Grants to student clubs and societies enable our students to participate in a variety of activities, from volunteering with Nightline to playing sport, providing them with the opportunity to develop the personal skills required in life and the workplace.
