A PUBLIC LECTURE SERIES AND EXHIBITION by 'POLYARK II GLASGOW'
'Polyark II Glasgow' consists of Year 4 and 5 students and tutors whose team hosted a very successful opening to the 2010 Public Lecture Series, 'Calculated Uncertainty: Clairvoyance in Architecture', combined with the exhibition opening of 'Polyark II Glasgow', on Thursday 18th February 2010.
Over 200 people attended the event, to hear renowned UK architect John Lyall, Norwegian architect and academic Per Kartvedt and head academic and alumni, Alan Atlee. A group of architecture students attended from Birmingham City University, contributing work arising from the 'Polyark II' collaboration. Sites in need of development were identified in Birmingham and Glasgow. The students swapped cities to induce radical rethinking applied to urban regeneration amongst other topics, by moving their 'studios' around the country.
'Polyark II' is a continuation of revolutionary thinker and influential architect Cedric Price's 'Polyark' programme of the 1970s, where original
ideas on design were undertaken in transit, shared and argued over by a variable community of students and tutors, operating in Price-preferred
conditions of 'calculated uncertainty'. It is hoped that our events have revived the wish to inspire future communication and co-operation between the schools' students. John Lyall and Per Kartvedt were colleagues of Price, in contrast future talks will include award winning young practices, for example, Tom de Paor (Ireland) was 'Young Architect of the Year' and world famous C J Lim was rated in the 'Top Ten Young International Architects of 2007'.
Our project started at the beginning of the academic session in September 2009, temporarily colonising the UK railway system and involving eight schools of architecture between Canterbury and Glasgow who travelled a line that traverses the country from the Medway to the Forth. The eight schools of architecture were:
* Canterbury School of Architecture, University for the Creative Arts
* The Architectural Association
* London South Bank University
* Birmingham City University
* de Montfort University, Leicester
* University of Lincoln
* Liverpool University
* University of Strathclyde, Glasgow

On The Line - 2009-10 First Year Exhibition At The Old Templeton Carpet Factory, Glasgow.
Open To public: Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th January 10.00-16.00.
AND BY PUBLIC DEMAND, ALSO OPEN:
Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th 10am-4pm
In just one week 100 First Year Architectural students from Strathclyde University have put together an exhibition of projects produced in their first 12 weeks of study.
‘On The Line’ is an exhibition put together by 100 first year architectural students of Strathclyde University, all of whom have just completed their first 12 weeks of study. The temporary venue at the old Templeton Carpet Factory, Glasgow Green, has been gifted by Credential Holdings Ltd, and sets the theme of the exhibition, an echo of days gone by, when anyone could hang their washing on the lines in front of the building. After a hugely successful private opening last weekend, the exhibition is now open to the general public on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th of January so that more people can catch a glimpse of this new, aspiring generation of architects at a very exciting stage in their development.
The display of creativity and architectural imagination has been produced by students from 11 countries, some fresh out of school, some have been around the block, some are homegrown, and others have come from as far afield as Taiwan. All have the same ambition to become great architects and the comprehensive programme at Strathclyde will hopefully help them achieve that goal.
Hanging in the space are the results of two projects. The first asks the question what does it mean ‘to furnish’ and ends with full size sculptural structures designed to support a person in a set pose and built to a budget of only £50. The second asks what does it mean ‘to shelter’ and culminates in exciting designs set in landscapes ranging from the Isle of Bute, to the rugged Ayrshire coast, and Kielder Forest in Northumberland.
Students on the course are guided by staff from the leading architectural practices in Scotland, such as Gareth Hoskins Architects and GMAD. Justin Fenton of Page and Park Architects, a guest at the exhibition last week, felt that this was reflected in the quality of the work on display. He said “ Some would say it was a little too early for these students to begin exhibiting their work but as Kathy Li, Year One Director of Studies says, "Exposing students to the reality of organising and presenting their work to external scrutiny is a really important part of the eventual transition from student to professional”".
