Why Study International Business?
Globalisation of business is all around us. What we buy comes from far away; the things we make, from our music to our aero engines, reach peoples everywhere. IBM computers become Chinese, and Glenmorangie American, while The Royal Bank of Scotland and Scottish & Newcastle become global industry leaders. In financial services, pharmaceuticals, beverage, motorcar and popular music industries, UK firms - large and small - are winning internationally. So you may wish to study international business to understand the development of international business, the challenges in managing international businesses, and the different approaches to doing it. It is a current, relevant and interesting subject.
If you study here you will study international business on a top programme offered by the internationally renowned Strathclyde Business School. On our programme you will not only study international business, you will experience it. Normally, you will study one or both of your third-year semesters in a highly reputable university overseas.
You may also want to study international business because employers know that their futures depend on their success in the world economy, and so they need to recruit those who will make that happen. Graduates with a knowledge of international business and with the experience and maturity that comes from having studied overseas are in demand. You may wish to study international business because it gives you all the flexibility of choice and potential change for which Strathclyde business programmes are well known. You will see the extensive range of subjects that you can include within your own tailored degree.
Structure
YEARS 1 & 2: In each of the first two years, you will undertake the Business School's Management Development Programme and classes in International Business ('Foundations of Management and International Business' in first year; 'International Business Analysis' in second year). In your first year you choose basic classes in three Business subjects which interest you, plus another class from anywhere in the University (this can be a further Business subject if you wish). In your second year you choose two of these Business subjects in which to specialise.
YEAR 3: In the third year, you will normally study classes in your business specialisms and international business, in English, at a top partner university or business school outside of the UK (typically in Europe or North America). This can be for either one semester or for the whole year. At Strathclyde, another International Business class is offered 'Managing Across Cultures and Frontiers').
YEAR 4: Your fourth year is your Honours year. To demonstrate your Honours ability to potential employers, you will craft a dissertation: with one-to-one support from a specialist, you will investigate and write up a topic that interests you personally within real businesses and industries. You will then take classes in international business and in one of your business specialisms.
