What is Technology and Business Studies

Businesses require able, enthusiastic and broadly educated people who can quickly master techniques and procedures and advance to positions of responsibility and leadership. The BSc in Technology and Business Studies meets that requirement by helping students understand the language of technology and of business and the communication skills used by managers on a daily basis.

Students take Technology subjects and Business subjects in equal measure for the duration of the course, along with an integrating seminar programme. The flexibility of the TBS course allows students to design their course to suit their own career targets.

Uniqueness of TBS

Q. What makes TBS different from other double discipline or generalist degree courses?
A. The time and effort devoted to developing your transferable skills. A series of seminars runs continuously throughout the degree course, allowing you to develop skills such as public speaking, negotiation, interviewing, decision-making, non-verbal communication, problem-solving, critical thinking, motivation, group dynamics and teamworking. Cases, exercises and talks from industrialists help you understand the interactions and interrelationships between technology and business.

Q. In what other ways is TBS different?
A Student care. The wide variety of options in the TBS course means almost every student is pursuing a unique programme of study, and they receive individual support and academic counselling from the TBS core staff.

Environmental Technology

This is a principle subject for Technology and Business Studies which aims to create graduates who have combined their business awareness with an overall awareness of current major environmental themes and issues. Students choose environmentally-focused classes offered by a number of departments across the University.

Classes include: Technology and Sustainable Development; Ecology and Pollution Impact; Water and Environmental Management; Solid Waste Management; Environmental Law; Air Pollution Control.

Manufacturing Engineering

This is a principle subject for Technology and Business Studies. Manufacturing engineers handle the manufacture of products. They decide the methods of manufacture, the nature of the equipment to be used and the skills required of the workforce. They are concerned with the productivity of manufacturing resources and with the necessary organising and controlling procedures. They also ensure that the manufacturing system of a company is properly geared up to the company's competitive requirements in terms of price, delivery and quality.

Computer Science

This is a principle subject for Technology and Business Studies which offers a range of classes selected to give Technology and Business Studies students a sound grounding in the application of computers.

Classes in the first two years cover the fundamentals of computer understanding: previous knowledge of computers is not required, although obviously it is beneficial. Reference is made to the social and legal context of computer use and to the basics of computer hardware, but the emphasis is on the development of programming skills, and particularly on the analysis of problems to make them amenable to computer solution. Subsequent classes apply this knowledge in a number of areas of specific relevance.
