High-quality courses, classes and research supervision

The Department of Creative and Aesthetic Studies delivers high-quality courses, classes and research supervision.  The Department provides teaching programmes in music, art and design, theatre studies, media, and teacher education; and generates new developments, structures and opportunities through partnership with arts organisations and other agencies to create wider access and to enhance arts provision in Scotland.

The department hosts the renowned BA Applied Music degree course which provides students with comprehensive knowledge and experience of all aspects of the modern music industry.  A diverse range of musical styles is encouraged including celtic, jazz, classical, electronic and rock.  The degree begins with a broad range of modules which cover musicianship, composition, recording, performance and academic studies. Students can then develop a specialism in depth, focusing on either Composition, Technology, Performance or Academic Studies.

The teaching focus is on the application of skills and knowledge in community, business and educational contexts. The Department also works in collaboration with Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, The City Halls, The Old Fruitmarket and The SECC on major international festivals including Celtic Connections, the Glasgow International Jazz Festival and the Glasgow International Guitar Festival.

The Department is involved in a number of research initiatives including the SCARLATTI project and the education dimensions of the Celtic Connections and International Jazz festivals in Glasgow. Facilities include professional recording studios, rehearsal spaces and a computer music lab as well as art and theatre studies facilities.
