About the Department

main content

The Department of Computer and Information Sciences is situated in the Faculty of Science where it enjoys close research collaborations with Statistics and Modelling Science, Mathematics and the Bio-Sciences.

The Department also has excellent relations with other faculties in the University, providing a fertile environment for cross-disciplinary research which is funded by the research councils, industry and government agencies. The Department participates in cross-faculty collaborations with Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Management Science.

The Department is lively and diverse with research interests spanning the whole spectrum of theory and application from fundamental algorithms and programming language design to information management and HCI. This diversity gives the Department a refreshing perspective on the Computer Science curriculum and its role in the modern world.

The Department has 31 academic staff, 13 support and secretarial staff and a lively community of more than 50 research staff and PhD students. Research students come mainly from Scotland and the UK, Europe, Malaysia, India, China, Africa and the Middle East. In addition, in any year we have about 75 students enrolled on our taught post-graduate programmes, about half coming from overseas. The Department warmly welcomes overseas students and does all it can to integrate them into the life of the Department, the University and the city of Glasgow.
