This module aims to provide students with insight and understanding of the core issues facing a technology based business. Specifically: appreciation of the internal value of entrepreneurship, innovation and commercialization activities to business; application of business opportunity frameworks; and an understanding of what investors look for when assessing business potential.

After completing this module participants will be able to:

  • appreciate the difference between strategic and operational business activities
  • understand the challenges of communicating technical value to non-technologists
  • be able to pitch a business opportunity
  • be able to shape an investment pitch and to critique other’s presentations from a business development perspective
  • Understand the processes of opportunity recognition and accessing resources
  • Appreciate marketing frameworks for assessing the risks and potential for a new business
  • Understand the role of cash-flow in creating a sustainable business
  • Appreciate the link between technology commercialization and economic growth/wealth creation
  • Understand the need for Intellectual Property Protection and how they relate to technology
