Visiting Professor ALAN BELL BEng (Hons) PhD CEng FICE

Professor Alan Bell BEng (Hons) PhD CEng FICEProf. Bell has a distinguished career both in Academia and Industry. He holds a degree in civil engineering and a PhD in soft clays from QUB. His academic research and teaching experience spans many challenges of natural clays and reinforced soil structures. In industry, Prof Bell has consulted widely on the design of foundations and retaining walls, and the analysis of the failure of a range of natural slopes, foundations, embankments and cuttings. Prof Bell joined Keller in 1982 where he initially focused on technical and contracts management in large ground improvement projects, later joining the leadership team at newly acquired Keller Colcrete, which developed Soilfrac, Compaction and Jet grouting systems for the industry. In 1991 he took on responsibility for ground improvement which introduced Vibro Concrete Columns, Minicats, and geotextile load transfer platforms. In 1997 Prof Bell became Managing Director of Keller UK retiring in 2009. He is the immediate past chairman of the Federation of Piling Specialists (FPS). The FPS represents the ground engineering sector of the industry and members lead the way safety in innovation, technical excellence, design, workmanship and commercial awareness for the sector. This is no idle boast since all members are independently audited for their standards in safety, technical ability, quality, environmental aspects and training.

Visiting Professor Ed McCann MSc BEng CEng FICE

Professor Ed McCann MSc BEng CEng FICE Professor McCann is a Director of Expedition Engineering where he is responsible for Civil and Environmental Infrastructure and with Chris Wise is responsible for identifying and setting the strategic direction of the practice. Ed is an experienced project director in addition to being an innovative and creative designer who specialises in complex multi-disciplinary projects. Recent projects include the award wining 2012 Olympic Velodrome and Infinity Bridge, Stockton-on-Tees. Other projects include the 2012 Olympic Development Water Strategy and over £60M worth of water infrastructure on Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport.
A graduate of Imperial College London and the National University of Mexico, Ed worked at Binnie Black and Veatch from 1990 to 2002 and during this period taught creative design at Imperial College for several years and co-conceived the highly successful Constructionarium. He has since been the co founder of Think Up, a Trust Company with a focus on design education with three main themes of innovation in engineering education, inspiring career choices and skills for sustainable development. He has been the driving force in the development of the 'Expedition Workshed' which is a 'collection of free, high quality stuff to help people learn about civil and structural engineering', now widely used by Universities throughout the world. He is a Fellow and Trustee of the Institution of Civil Engineers and chairs their Best Practice Panel. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and co-directed the Royal Designers Summerschool between 2006 and 2008. He has also appeared in over 35 TV documentaries about engineering and architecture.

Visiting Professor Ana Maria Esteves BComm MBA PhD GAICD

Dr Ana Maria Esteves BComm MBA PhD GAICD Ana Maria is Director of social impact management consultancy Community Insights and is co-founder of SIAhub, an online platform to serve the social impact assessment community of practice. She is also an associate with the Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining at the University of Queensland.
She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the International Association for Impact Assessment and is a past Chair of the Social Impact Assessment Section. She is also a member of AusAID's Panel of Experts on Mining Sector Governance in Africa; and a member of the advisory group to Solidaridad, an NGO working with artisanal and small-scale gold miners.
Ana Maria has developed particular interests in two areas: social impact assessment and local content. Ana Maria is author of several journal articles on mining and social development, and local content. She has recently co-edited a book titled ‘New Directions in Social Impact Assessment’ (2011) with Frank Vanclay. She also has a strong capacity for working with different cultures. Born in Mozambique, she has also resided in Australia, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Hong Kong before moving to Groningen, The Netherlands.

Inaugural Lecture: Professor Esteves will give her inaugural lecture on Wednesday, 19th June, 2013. Her topic will be

"Realising the value of social impact assessment to civil engineering projects."

Visiting Professor Ross Marshall, CEnv, FIEMA, FSA (Scot)

Dr. Ross Marshall, CEnv, FIEMA, FSA (Scot) Professor Ross Marshall is an Executive Manager within the Environment Agency of England & Wales with responsibility for the National Environmental Assessment Service (NEAS). NEAS provide environmental leadership and technical support across a wide range of Agency functions, notably the £725 million/year engineering and asset management programmes for Flood & Coastal Erosion, Navigation, Fisheries and Water Quality. He is a past President of the International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA) and a previous Board Member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA).
Professor Marshall is a Chartered Environmentalist and Biologist. He has fellowship level membership of two professional Institutes and has Non-Exec Director experience within several UK and international organizations. He is an experienced Manager with a track record of delivering corporate environmental programmes, infrastructure projects, strategic planning and environmental management operations within both Government and the Public sector. Accomplished at operating within the Energy, Water and Environmental Regulatory fields, he has experience of dealing with Regulators, NGOs and Ministerial departments at the highest national & international level. He was previously the Environmental Manager of ScottishPower’s SP PowerSystems utilities. He is a PhD graduate of the University.

Visiting Professor ANDREW SLOAN MSc BSc CEng FICE MIM3

Professor Andrew Sloan MSc BSc CEng FICE MIM3 Prof Sloan is a Director of Donaldson Associates Ltd where he is responsible for the firms Glasgow and Hong Kong offices and the geotechnical engineering company wide. He is a graduate of Edinburgh University (Geology) and Leeds University (Engineering Geology) and has spent 27 years working in civil engineering gaining a wide range of experience. His areas of specialisation are in slope and tunnel engineering. Prof Sloan is a chartered engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers. He has experience in the management and delivery of technically challenging and complex ground engineering projects. His main area of interest is in the development of underground space. From 2008 and 2011 he was a Member of the Committee on Radioactive Waste Management (CoRWM). He has worked on projects in North and South America, Africa, Europe, China and South East Asia. Recent projects include being Project Director for the Contractor’s design element on London Crossrail Contracts C300/C410 which encompasses the temporary Sprayed Concrete Tunnels of Tottenham Court Road and Bond Street Stations and he was responsible for the independent checking of Farringdon Station and Stepney Green cavern. He is Project Director for the design of the drill and blast tunnels and caverns on Contract 824 on the new high speed railway in Hong Kong and has responsibility for the design of 16km of large diameter sewer tunnel in Abu Dhabi being constructed in rock by Tunnel Boring Machine. He is extensively involved in the hard rock tunnels of the Glendoe Hydro Electric Scheme in Scotland.

Visiting Professor STEVE WALLACE BSc (Hons) PhD MIEMA

Professor Steve Wallace BSc (Hons) PhD MIEMAProf Wallace is Head of Environment and Global Standards, National Grid, a post within the senior management team responsible for Safety, Health and Environmental strategy for National Grid across the global corporation. His key responsibilities include development of all aspects of sustainable environmental policies, strategies and operating models, including climate change, across National Grid operations in the US and UK, reporting to the Executive Board on strategic sustainability, environmental, climate change and environmental risk management issues, development of global standards for Safety, Health and Environmental issues to promote best practice between UK and US operations, managing a team of environmental specialists that support delivery of National Grid's environmental objectives, championing of National Grid environmental approaches with internal and external stakeholders, liaison with key governmental and NGO stakeholders on up and coming environmental issues and commissioning research to inform policy development and best practice. Prof Wallace has been responsible for delivery of all aspects of National Grids contaminated land strategy in the UK, from developing 5 year business plans through to delivery of site specific risk management projects. This involved site prioritization and selection from a national portfolio and justifying to internal businesses, environmental regulators and OFGEM. He has managed a wide range of technical and policy issues related to waste and contaminated land both through internal advice and response to draft documents produced by DEFRA, the Environment Agency and others. Prof Wallace was the chair of the Development Team in the Soil Guideline Value Task Force. This was a Cabinet Office Better Regulation initiative formed in order to develop more appropriate technical guidance to support the Part 2A regime.
