Certificate of Professional Development in Adult Teaching and Learning

What is the Certificate?

This Certificate course has been developed to give those involved in the education of adults a solid grounding in learning theory and practice so that an appropriate standard can be set. The course is aimed at those whose work involves teaching in an adult learner-centred environment and aims to provide insights into adult learning as well as enable the learning of appropriate skills and strategies.  On successful completion you will be awarded a University of Strathclyde Certificate of Professional Development in Adult Teaching and Learning.

When is it offered?  How long does it last?

The course is normally offered twice per year and consists of approximately 40 hours of learning.  This includes a minimum of 10 hours tutorial contact. Tutorial contact is on Saturdays from 10.00-12.30. It is anticipated that the Certificate will be completed within 3 months of commencement.

What will I learn?

By the end of the course you should be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of the principles of adult learning;
  • prepare a lesson plan exemplifying the use of learner-centred styles and explain how these will contribute to a deeper understanding of the topic by students;
  • analyse a primary source document in the field of education and lifelong learning;
  • produce an action plan for continuing self-development in adult learning.

What happens on the course?

There are three components to the Certificate:

Component One: Principles of Adult Learning

By the conclusion of this component, you should be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of the reasons for learning
  • describe the characteristics of the adult learner
  • demonstrate an understanding of the four central concepts in programme planning
  • reflect on the importance of correct sequencing in teaching and learning
  • identify best practice in teaching and learning
  • plan a teaching and learning session.

Component Two: Ways of Learning

By the conclusion of this component, you should be able to:

  • distinguish different learning styles and their characteristics
  • recognise the significance of the world wide web as a teaching and learning tool
  • call up web-based materials for subject reinforcement in teaching and learning
  • understand and use new teaching techniques
  • identify strategies for working with groups.

Component Three: Politics of Lifelong Learning

By the conclusion of this component, you should be able to:

  • analyse educational terms and deduce their implications
  • demonstrate how the latest educational thinking implies new power relationships in teaching and learning
  • reflect and comment on an appropriate piece of educational writing.

These components are not taught discretely. There is overlap between and across the presentations in order that the learning experience is as holistic as possible.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by 3 compulsory elements:

  • A 1000 word essay on a topic within Adult Learning.
  • A 700-1000 word commentary on a set piece of educational writing.
  • A lesson plan on an appropriate topic.

How much does it cost?

This course is eligible for ILA200.
