Evaluating counselling with young people

The Counselling Unit at the University of Strathclyde is one of the leading national bodies evaluating counselling work with young people. The Evaluation Report of our own Counselling in Schools service has been nationally acclaimed, and we have received commissions to carry out further evaluations and analysis of counselling work within school settings. We are also closely involved with the development of a new evaluation tool for young people: Young Person's CORE. What makes the evaluation work of the Unit particularly special is that, unlike most other research organisations, we have an in-depth knowledge of counselling work with young people, and are committed to the development of this service. We are also one of the leading international centres of excellence in person-centred therapy, and are committed to a way of working with young people - both as clients and as participants in research - which deeply respects their contributions and potentials.

If you are running or developing a counselling service for young people and would like to discuss how we might help you develop the evaluation aspect of your work, please contact us at counselling.unit@strath.ac.uk (0141-950 3359). We offer a range of services from analysing a service's data; to setting up a full service evaluation, conducting it, and analysing and writing-up the results.

International Collaboration

The Counselling Unit of Strathclyde University is one of the largest such University Units in Europe. Furthermore, the Unit has developed its specialism in the person-centred approach in such a way as to be at the forefront of that philosophy, as it relates to counselling theory, practice, training and supervision. The Unit can devote a limited resource to assisting the development of professional counsellor training in other parts of the world. Historically that resource has been invested in initiatives in Greece and Croatia. The University of Strathclyde accredits the Diploma in Person-Centred Counselling offered by TCPA Hellas, based in Athens. TCPA Hellas offers one of the most expansive person-centred counselling training courses available in Europe. The Unit has also assisted the University of Rijeka in Croatia to develop its counselling training initiative. This project has involved regular exchanges between Scotland and Croatia and has been supported financially by the British Council and the Croatian Ministry of Science.

The Counselling Unit contributes to international collaboration in many other ways. The full-time Diploma has attracted students from more than twenty countries and the new MSc in Counselling will further that international collaboration.
