The department came into being in August 2004. Its aim is to build on the strengths of its constituent parts and become an even stronger centre of excellence in terms of teaching and learning, research and curriculum development, and continuing professional development. The Department has an excellent reputation with the Scottish teaching profession for leadership, consultancy, and curriculum development.

The department has five divisions:

The department covers most subjects taught in secondary schools in Scotland.

The Department has a major role in training postgraduate students to become secondary school teachers and both PGDE(S) and ATQ courses are located within it. Department members have also a significant input into the PGDE(P) and B.Ed. courses. Members of the Department are engaged in a wide range of research projects related to the primary and secondary curriculum. Major themes running through the work of the Department are Information Technology and the production of teaching and learning materials for primary and secondary schools; in almost every secondary subject area colleagues are in the forefront, both in terms of writing textbooks and ICT material.

The department has approximately 50 academic staff and 20 clerical and support staff, as well as some 18 part-time/teaching associate staff. There are PhD and Masters students in the department.
