Mathematics Science & Technological Education

main content

Welcome

This Division comprises six sections: Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Home Economics and Technology. It is also the home of The Strathclyde Science & Technology Forum and The Bioloab

All six sections and The Biolab are in the Smith Building on the Jordanhill Campus while The Strathclyde Science & Technology Forum is on the 9th floor of the Graham Hills Building on the John Anderson Campus.

The Divisional Office is in R309c on the ground floor of the Smith Building.

There are two computing laboratories in R307 and R308 which are used for teaching but when R307 is not being used for teaching it is available to students who are taking courses within the Division of MSTE. Within the Smith Building are also housed the teaching laboratories and workshops used in the delivery of Divisional courses.

Sections are involved, in partnership with schools, in the training of teachers. Much of this work is with the pre-service training of secondary school teachers who are enrolled on these courses:

Staff are also involved in BEd (Honours) and PGDE(Primary) qualifications for primary school teaching.

In addition to these pre-service teaching courses, a number if in-service courses are run by the Division for teachers in both primary and secondary sectors. We also run in-service courses for Egyptian teachers of Mathematics and Science.

Strathclyde Science and Technology Forum

The Forum was established by Sir Graham Hills in 1981 to support schools' science and technology and to bring the University of Strathclyde to the wider community. Annually the SSTF presents around 150 Science and Technology workshops attracting about 3000 school children between the ages of 5-14, 150 teachers and 400 other adults to the University of Strathclyde.

SciTech topics include:

  • Basic magnetism
  • Basic light and colour
  • Basic sound
  • Advanced light and colour
  • Advanced sound
  • Electricity and magnetism
  • Robotics
  • The history and technology of Time.

The Biolab

The Biolab provides facilities for school teachers and pupils to carry out modern techniques in Biotechnology relevant to Standard Grade, Higher and Advanced Higher curricula. Experiments involving DNA profiling and amplification, antibody-antigen reactions and other biological procedures are also available to university students.
