Conch Shell

The conch shell with its spiral shape evolving from one point symbolises the origin of the universe from a single source, God. Another link with creation is the fact that when it is blown it produces a sound which represents AUM. According to the Hindu tradition Aum was the sound associated with the beginning of the universe.

The conch shell may be found on shrines and is blown at times of special prayers such as the arti ceremony. The conch shell is the symbol of ether or space. It is also linked with water and the sea.
