Tallit

A tallit is a large prayer shawl, made of wool or silk, which has zitzit or fringes attached to each of its four corners, a practice which can be traced back to the Book of Numbers, chapter 15, verses 37-41. This passage states that the practice is to remind Jews that they are to obey God's commandments and live a life dedicated to God as it was God who delivered them out of slavery in Egypt under Moses.
The tallit is usually white and has often got black or blue stripes on it. The tallit is worn over the shoulders with the corners left hanging at the front and the back so that the wearer is surrounded by the fringes. It is worn by Jewish men during morning prayer and all day during the Day of Atonement.
