Summer Graduation
Congratulations to the students graduating from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in July 2012. More than 70 undergraduates and postgraduates celebrated success with their families, who had travelled to Glasgow for the special day. It was a wonderfully international gathering.
Strategic Environmental Assessment Guest Speaker
Professor Riki Therivel from Oxford Brookes University and a partner of the sustainability consultancy Levett-Therivel gave a talk at the University of Strathclyde on the topic of “Sustainability Appraisal by inspectors and judges” on 25 June 2012. The event attracted more than 60 people including from Aberdeenshire Council, CASA Planning & Environment, Glasgow Caledonian University, Glasgow City Council, Halcrow Group Ltd., Mainstream Renewable Power, Mott MacDonald Ltd, Network Rail, Ramage Young, RSPB Scotland, Scottish Government, Transport Scotland, University of Edinburgh and University of Manchester. The talk generated a lively discussion between participants and was also a very successful knowledge-exchange event.
Professor Therivel is a world expert in strategic environmental assessment (SEA), appropriate assessment, sustainability appraisal and environmental impact assessment. She has advised numerous local, regional, and national authorities on how to carry out SEAs and sustainability appraisals; has written seven books and many articles on these subjects; and runs training courses worldwide. She also wrote the UK guidance on how to implement the European SEA Directive for land use plans and she was the 2003 recipient of the International Association for Impact Assessment's individual award for her contribution to the development of SEA and excellence in teaching and research. The event was organised by Dr Elsa João, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, David Livingstone Centre for Sustainability, herself an expert on SEA.
