Research Profile

My research activity is concerned with the extension of sustainable design knowledge beyond the traditional, quantitative, system modelling approaches that currently exist. The new knowledge is concerned with developing new qualitative, user-centered approaches to sustainable design that are informed by original empirical research and theories and methodologies from anthropology, science and technology studies and the cognitive sciences.

Esteem Factors

2008: Invited to University of Southern Denmark to speak on inter-disciplinary working and new approaches to sustainable design research.

2005 and 2007: Invited to co- develop and deliver The Royal Academy of Engineering's 2005 and 2007  'Summer School for Teachers of Engineering Design' - supported by the Design Council, Institution of Engineering Designers and Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Teaching Profile

My teaching activity is concerned with the education of skills and knowledge for product design and development in commercial contexts. This teaching is active across UG and PG modules within DMEM. Areas of specialist teaching: project management; drawing methods; creativity methods; user-centered design; user and culture research methods; brand design; architectural product design; consumer product design; inclusive design; sustainable design; manual prototyping; digital prototyping; design for manufacture.

I am an academic advisor on user-centered design issues for a range of KTPs with Scottish SMEs.
