PRODUCT DESIGN ENGINEERING

(UCAS: H771 BEng/PDE MEng; UCAS: H770 MEng/PDE;)

Course Information

For the first two years of the course, students study a mix of classes in creating (design), making (manufacturing technology) and managing (engineering and enterprise management). Classes for years 1 and 2 are common to the courses of Product Design Engineering (PDE), Manufacturing Engineering and Technology (MET) and Engineering and Enterprise Management (EEM), making transfer between these courses possible at the end of Year 2.

After the first two foundation years, the PDE course focuses on specialist design topics such as aesthetics (the look of a product) and ergonomic design (design for health, safety and comfort), prototyping and modelling, mechatronics, computer aided design and design engineering.

In Year 4 (BEng) and Year 5 (MEng), the focus is on both an individual and group project. Students may choose from a list of project titles and briefs or develop their own for an individual project. A member of academic staff acts as supervisor to offer support and guidance throughout the project.

In addition, the Product Development Project gives students the opportunity to experience the "real world". Teams of students act as consultants to help some of the Department's industrial partners resolve particular issues. MEng students also undertake a research dissertation in Year 5.

MEng students can also study for an additional Diploma qualification in either Management or Entrepreneurship. This requires the study of an additional three subjects per year during Years 2 to 5. The Diplomas are recognised by employers, both in terms of academic achievement and in the salaries paid to graduates.
