GES Recommendation of the MSc Economic Management and Policy degree

UK Government Economic Service Recommendation

The Strathclyde MSc Economic Management and Policy (EMP) degree was the first masters programme to be formally Recommended by the UK Government Economic Service (GES). Our new MSc in Applied Economics degree is an updated and streamlined version of that previous degree, and the Department of Economics is currently seeking approval from the GES for this Recommendation be given to the new, updated, programme.

This Recommendation was given for several reasons. For several years the Economic's Department's masters degree has attracted economists who work in the Government Economic Service to further their professional development by part time study for a higher degree in economics. The number of government economists attracted onto the programme increased during the time that the degree was available for study by Open Learning, a mode that offered entirely online web-based teaching and learning. Of most importance in the decision to Recommend the degree was the fact that the Government Economic Service regarded the content and delivery of our degree to be powerful vehicles for the professional development of its economists.

The core skills we develop, and the thorough-going applied economics orientation of our teaching and learning, are also ideal for economists working in the private sector and other parts of the public sector. And, given the generic nature of applied economics skills, the value of the degree programme  is equally high to participants from any part of the world.
