Strathclyde Student Engineers win BP Scholarships

Two students from the Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering have become winners of a new scholarship scheme, awarded by a major multinational energy firm.

MEng Electrical & Mechanical Engineering students, Callum Vause & Charles Macleod, along with Mechanical Engineering student, Andrew Mathieson, have been chosen to receive the inaugural BP Final Year Student Scholarship. The award, made to top-performing engineering students, is designed to recognise, reward and support academic excellence and the potential for future achievements.

Callum and Charles, who have just begun the final year of their MEng degree programme, have won £5000 each towards the cost of their study, as well as a guaranteed place at BP’s assessment centre for a graduate job upon its Graduate Training Programme.

Charles said, “It is a great privilege to be awarded this sought after scholarship, not only assisting me with my final year studies, but giving me the opportunity to gain employment within a pioneering global energy leader.”

Strathclyde is the only Scottish University to be chosen by BP to participate in its Scholarship scheme, which is valued at £1.1m over the next three years. Only eight UK institutions were selected, including Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial College. “I am honoured to have been awarded this prestigious BP scholarship, which will not only benefit me in the short term financially, but provide a solid base for my future career development. After an extensive testing selection process, I am delighted to have been recognised by such an internationally renowned company”, said Callum.

All of the Department’s penultimate year students were encouraged to apply for the scholarships. Professor Walter Johnstone, Head of Electronic & Electrical Engineering at Strathclyde said, “The Department is delighted to congratulate its students, Callum and Charles, on their achievements in winning such prestigious scholarships. As well as providing financial support for their studies, the scholarships offer an excellent opportunity to secure a job with a major energy employer prior to graduation. We are delighted to see the hard work and talent of our students being recognised and rewarded.”

BP regularly recruits engineers from Strathclyde.  These Awards are the latest part of their ongoing programme of campus activity and of BP’s Corporate & Social Responsibility programme. Further information on the scholarship scheme can be found at www.bp.com/ukgraduates/scholarships
