HIFU Techniques

main content

This research aims to adapt the High Intensity Focussed Ultrasound (HIFU) methods used in biomedicine for application in industrial process control systems. Analogous with the current research trends in biomedical HIFU, this research programme aims to create versatile ultrasonic transducer systems for intensification across a wide range of industrial pharmaceutical processes. In this work a single array transducer is fixed at one location and electronic phasing used to steer the pressure focus within the vessel. The finite element modelling package PZFlex has been used to design standard linear array configurations that can be used with conventional cylindrical reactor vessels. Array transducers operating below 500kHz have been designed and evaluated for process intensification efficiency. Careful consideration of the implementation of such array systems is necessary as their applicability in standard cylindrical vessels is limited due to the system geometry restricting the achievable location of the focal regions within the vessel.
