The Department has a range of excellent teaching spaces including interactive classrooms and brand new state-of-the-art laboratories, equipped with the latest technologies.

Students have access to all the Department IT facilities, including e-learning, web based resources, wireless internet and free email.  There are purpose built computer labs to support teaching and learning, and an IT support team to help with all your IT needs.

Specialised facilities include high voltage labs, top-flight engineering simulators and laser and photonics labs. Technical and Experimental Officers are on hand to offer support and guidance on individual subject material.

Stewardships of our students is of the utmost importance and this is emphasized throughout the degree courses, with the Department delivering small group tutorials, consolidation activities, counsellors and mentors to support students during their study period.

Our courses are taught by a blend of modern teaching methods including interactive lectures, problem-solving tutorials and lab-based workshops. Computer Aided Learning, Web based and multimedia facilities are used for course delivery and a variety of assessment methods such as examinations and course work (report writing, lab work, presentations etc) are used.

Group projects are undertaken to develop interpersonal, communication and transferable skills essential to careers in industry.  Guest presentations are a regular feature of the courses. These are often conducted by Industry partners and/or Department alumni who share with current students how they have put their knowledge and learning into practice in the real world.
