Who Is This Course For?
This course is for graduates who need to improve their ability in English and up-date their subject knowledge before beginning a postgraduate course at the University of Strathclyde. The GDEPS course will benefit students with a degree from your own country who
- have a standard of English which is below the level required for direct entry onto a Master's or PhD course at Strathclyde (the required level is usually an IELTS score of 6.5 or 7.0 or equivalent) and
- have a subject knowledge in the area of their proposed postgraduate degree but would like to have some additional preparation before beginning to study their chosen subject at postgraduate level.
In addition to academic qualifications, you will need to provide evidence of your English language proficiency before you can begin the course, and you are strongly advised to take the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test. The minimum entry requirement for the Graduate Diploma in English for Postgraduate study is IELTS 5.0 or equivalent.
Students will study units that will raise the level of their general and academic English and prepare them for a postgraduate course by providing further expertise in the subject area of their Master's degree. The units cover:-
- general English language improvement (grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation);
- listening and Note-Taking in seminars and lectures;
- reading academic books, journals and articles;
- appropriate use of subject-specific academic vocabulary;
- how to write essays and reportsetc. in the correct academic style;
- how to carry out, write up and present independent research;
- how to develop effective learning strategies and self-study skills;
- orientation to British culture and university life;
- lectures with tutors from the various postgraduate subject departments.
The Graduate Diploma in English for Postgraduate Study is a full-time 9-month course.
A learning needs analysis will be done at the start of the course, and all students will be encouraged to develop an individual study plan in collaboration with their tutors.
Students will be able to use the University's extensive library facilties and have free access to the Internet.
Students will take part in lectures relevant to their future postgraduate studies.
Students' progress will be regularly assessed through coursework and through individual tutorials.
The Language Learning Centre (English Language Teaching) is devoted to ensuring that students have the best possible learning experience while they are at the University of Strathclyde. Course participants will be able to use the excellent facilities of the recently refurbished Language Centre
The GDEPS course fee is £7,200
