International student profiles

Candy Naomi, Kenya
MSc Sustainability & Environmental Studies

I was made aware of my MSc programme through the Tullow Oil Scholarship Scheme. As Strathclyde participates in this worthwhile scheme I have gained a scholarship for the duration of my studies. Another important factor in choosing the MSc Sustainability and Environmental Studies was that it was suitable for my previous employment and educational background.

My programme has been very challenging as a lot of the teaching techniques are new to me. I really appreciate the style of teaching and how it prepares me for the real world work environment. I now understand even more why so many employers in my home country of Kenya seek students with a UK degree.

On completion of my MSc I plan to go back to Turkana in Kenya and work for an organisation that is keen on making a sustainable contribution in the environment they are operating in.  Strathclyde has boosted my confidence towards fulfilling this plan.

Ivan Shorokhov, Russia
Current PHD student (Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering)

I decided to study Engineering at Strathclyde for a number of reasons, one of them being that my department (Electronic and Electrical Engineering) has an established record of research excellence and world leading facilities. My MSc programme was both interesting and very challenging, with a wide choice of modules. The student class representative system has been of great benefit to me and my class mates. This enables us to raise any academic issues and bring them to the attention of staff members in my department. The careers services within the University has assisted me with a number of areas, including updating and improving my CV.

Having completed my MSc, I am now taking my PhD at Strathclyde, with my ultimate dream to become a tenured professor at a major research university.  The experience and knowledge gained at Strathclyde will certainly help towards achieving this goal.
