Enterprising Careers

A Centre For Excellence in the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow

Enterprising Careers is a well-established and internationally renowned centre within the University of Strathclyde. It specialises in research, knowledge exchange and training in three fields:

  • Enterprise / Entrepreneurial / Entrepreneurship education
  • Vocational teaching and learning
  • Career-related education and guidance

The Centre works with local and national government to lead and support new developments in these areas, and to be a 'critical friend' to organisations involved in enterprise and career development. The Centre has a comprehensive base in Scotland but its products and services are also sought internationally.

Enterprise education attempts to provide the basis for societal shift in terms of 'self starting' mentalities and carries in addition a number of purposes and effects: it raises the possibility of economic and social entrepreneurship in young people and communities and it helps to generate a 'can do' attitude in children, particularly important for individuals and groups who are on the margins of their communities. It contributes to more effective student-centred methodologies in teaching and learning and it helps to link education with business, both generally and in vocational education. There is also an impact on employability, as core skills increase and as young people proactively take charge of their lives, developing confidence and self esteem along the way; leading to adults who can contribute to the development of their communities.

Based on Scottish experience, a proven link now exists between 'enterprise' and excellence in the curriculum. The Centre is unique in the UK in its range of provision and its activities are now deemed 'best practice' by the EU and by Scottish government.
