This unit contributes to the continuing professional development and research base of the speech and language therapy profession.

Staff have expertise in the major areas of communication. Research in each area is concerned with the therapeutic processes of determining the nature of the problem, defining individual and population needs for service, planning and delivering intervention programmes, and evaluating outcomes.

The main areas of research are:

  • Children's speech and language disorders
  • Voice disorders
  • Stammering
  • Motor problems in adults
  • Stroke in adults
  • SLT policy research

External research collaborations exist with the University of Edinburgh, University of Newcastle, University College London, the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists and numerous NHS Trusts. There is also research collaboration with a number of other areas within the University.
