Headstart - science and engineering experiences course at university

Highlights from previous years :
What is Headstart?
Headstart is a one-week residential course for senior school pupils aimed at encouraging students of the highest ability to consider a career in technology-based industries. Students will normally be studying Mathematics and Science subjects, in particular Physics, and will normally have reached the end of year 12 (5th year in Scotland). Participants will undertake hands-on practical experiments from different areas of Engineering and gain an appreciation of the various branches of Engineering and what they each involve.

Headstart at Strathclyde
At Strathclyde we offer a range of activities to participants from a number of the University's ten engineering departments. The following also offer Undergraduate study opportunities :
Project work and team-building feature strongly in the programme, which includes an outdoor team-building exercise and gorge-walking expedition in the Scottish countryside. Participants have the chance to meet Engineering students and recent graduates and to go an industrial visit to one of Strathclyde’s partners in industry. An evening programme of social and sporting events is organised for everyone and you will also have the opportunity to experience life as a Strathclyde student while living in the campus village in the heart of the city-centre.

Project Work
Over the course of the week you will engage in stimulating projects drawn from different fields of Engineering. Projects are designed to show you how expertise from a variety of areas is combined and integrated into complex projects.

Each group is challenged with a project for practical application in a range of scenarios. You will gain practical experience of a project life-cycle from the conceptual stage through to presentation of concept, design and project completion. Throughout the project work, you will learn how to turn technical knowledge into practical solutions while working as part of a team.

Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurial skills are becoming increasingly important in today’s job market. The Strathclyde course includes a seminar from the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship which encourages students to think as entrepreneurs and to consider how the results of technical projects can be turned into commercial success.

Headstart and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
Headstart is recognised as a National Access Organisation for the residential project of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at Gold level. The programme meets all of the requirements of a residential project for the award, providing participants with the opportunity to: meet new people; experience an unfamiliar environment; work as part of a team; build new relationships and show concern for others; accept responsibility; develop communication skills; show initiative; and enjoy living and working with others.
