The Department of History's research environment has benefited from significant investment over the past decade or so. Nine new appointments have been made in subjects such as medieval Scottish History, modern European History, Asian and African history, the history of medicine/health and oral history.
Major grants have been awarded to staff members by the ESRC, the AHRC, the British Academy and the Wellcome Trust to carry out research, and publications from the Department have been shortlisted for prizes such as the Longman / History Today Book of the Year Prize and the Whitfield Prize. Regular meetings organised by the Department include Scottish history, Modern European history, health history and oral history seminars and the annual meeting of the Conference on Modern British History for Scotland, Northern Ireland and North Britain. The annual convention of the Society for the Social History of Medicine and the UK Oral History have recently been organised through the History Department at University of Strathclyde.
