Postgraduate Certificate in Philosophy with Children

The Postgraduate Certificate in Philosophy with Children is part of the University of Strathclyde’s MEd.

This part-time course is the only one of its kind in the UK. Students will be trained to facilitate Philosophy with Children in a range of contexts. The classes run on Tuesday evenings from 6-8.30pm.  The course is open to anyone who works with children of any age and in any setting; teachers, community educators, social workers are all welcome as are those working with children in other contexts.  The course is also appropriate for those that want to facilitate philosophical dialogue with adults.

Course Structure

Students will undertake three compulsory twenty credit modules in the following order:

Module one: Introduction to Philosophy and Philosophical Practice.  This module offers an introduction to the philosophy and logic that a facilitator of Philosophy with Children will require.  It will also provide opportunities for students to participate in philosophical dialogue at their own level.

Module two: Philosophy with Children Theory.  In this module students will be introduced to different approaches to practical philosophy and will learn how to choose stimulus materials, select appropriate questions to generate philosophical dialogue and to analyse dialogue.

Module three: Philosophy with Children Facilitation.  This module gives students the opportunity to bring together their learning in the previous two modules.  In this class they will undertake facilitation of Community of Philosophical Inquiry.

Course Duration

Two years with students completing two modules in year one and the final module in the second year.

Start Date

Modules one and two start in September and March respectively of the first year of study. Module three starts the following session.
