Research Interests


My research interests are focussed on the following areas: the Enlightenment and Romantic periods (including literature, philosophy, science, political discourse, travel writing and the representation of place); the language of poetry; children's literature.

Research Supervision


I am interested in supervising research students at MRes and PhD levels in any of the above areas. I am currently supervising students pursuing the following topics: Depictions of Decay in the Writing of Nathaniel Hawthorne; A Comparative Study of Malaysian and British Children's Literature; A Comparative Study of American and British Children’s Literature in the Nineteenth Century; Historicising Reader-Response Theory: Transgressive Art and Changing Interpretive Communities; Causality and Didacticism in Children's Literature.

Teaching Interests


I am currently teaching undergraduate classes in The Enlightenment to Romanticism, Reading Poetry, and Children’s Literature; I also teach a postgraduate class called The Discovery of Scotland, 1707-1830: The Sublime, the Beautiful and the Picturesque.

Administrative Roles


Postgraduate Research Co-ordinator (English) in the Graduate School of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
