Profile

Michael Higgins BA(Hons), MLitt, PhD.

Michael Higgins teaches across the JCW and English programmes, and is Subject Leader for Journalism and Creative Writing.

He serves on the editorial boards of Communication Theory and Journalism Education, and has acted as referee for more than twenty other journals, publishers and funding bodies across media and language analysis, and political science.  Michael has also been Visiting Professor in Political Communications at Libera Università Internazionale per gli Studi Sociali (LUISS) in Rome, is co-convenor of the Media and Politics Group of the Political Studies Association, and a member of the Ross Priory Broadcast Talk Group.

His current research projects include one on the history and development of populism in political discourse, as well as collaborative projects on discourses of confrontation in broadcasting and the language of journalism across genres.  Michael welcomes enquiries from new research students in any of his areas of publication: political communications, discourse analysis, cultural politics, and on the social and political roles of journalism.
