Jane Scoular's research is concerned with the intersection of theories of gender and law. She has published a number of books, research reports and many refereed articles on the subjects of informal justice, domestic violence and prostitution. Her research combines both empirical investigation with theoretical analysis and has been funded by Joseph Rowntree Foundation, the Economic and Social Research Council and the Scottish Executive.
She has supervised and is willing to consider post-graduate (LLM and PhD) students the following areas:
- Feminist legal theory
- Legal, social and political aspects of sexwork
- Issues in gender and law
She teaches on the following courses:

Jane Scoular LLB (University of Strathclyde), LLM (University of London) joined the Law School in 1995 where she is currently a Reader.
Jane was a Visiting Scholar at the Centre for Law and Society at New York University in 1999 and a Visiting Scholar at the Universities of Stockholm in Sweden in 2003 where she researched the Swedish law relating to prostitution. She was a member of the Scottish Parliament's Expert Panel on Prostitution advised on 'Being Outside: Constructing a Response to Street Prostitution. She recently edited a special issue of the Journal of Law and Society (with Teela Sanders) entitled ‘Regulating Sex Work: From Crime Control to Neo-liberalism?’ and is completing a monograph on ‘The Subject of Prostitution: Sex/work, Law and Social Theory’ to be published by Routledge/Cavendish.
