Biographical Summary

Calum is a graduate of the University of Strathclyde, gaining first class honours in 2003 having specialised in music production and music for film. Since then he has been working for the University of Strathclyde as Technology Support Coordinator in music as well as working as a musician (touring internationally with Jo Mango/El Dog/Ben TD), composer (BBC Gael, Sonic Design Agency, LBL.tv etc.) and producer (Sam Coombes, Todd Gordon, Peter Argondizza etc.).

As Technology Support Coordinator Calum provides support for staff and students in the use of music and music technology equipment as well as delivering aspects of the music portfolio.

Research

Calum recently completed an MMus in Sonic Arts at the University of Glasgow where he focused on physical aspects of sound art, looking at issues of interface, tangibility, intention and process. His work seeks to inform a dialog between opposing theories of acoustic ecology and acousmatic art and often encompasses aspects of sculpture, kinetics, physical computing and installation art. The key approach of this practice-led strand of research is an exploration of the 'physical sound object' in order to present tangible links between sound and the physical world which are symptomatic of the acoustic or 'natural' sonic experience. His recent 'Cymatic Sculpture' installation at The Arches, Glasgow as part of the Sound Thought 2011 conference, was a prototype of one such 'physical sound object': this used Ernst Chladi's nodal visualisation techniques, developed for the documentation and archival of sonic characteristics, which were adapted in order to display physical characteristics of a digital sound composition.

Recent work has been featured on international blogs (adafruit, synthtopia, sonicstate, soundwidgets, musformation, steelberry clones, abulafia etc…) and has been selected repeatedly as ‘Featured Artist’ content at thisiscentralstation.com.
