John Davies is Director of the . The main research agendas are public health and human factors. In the area of public health, CASP has undertaken work for the Scottish Executive, the Chief Scientist's Office, numerous health boards and trusts, the Department of Employment, the WHO, the Social Work Services Directorate and many other organisations. The topics researched include alcohol and smoking, illicit drug use, health education, suicide, depression and prison work. In the area of human factors, there is an equally wide agenda. CASP works in close collaboration with Human Factors Analysts Limited (HFAL), a University spin-out company, which was founded to commercialise ideas developed within CASP. CASP/HFAL developed the CIRAS risk management system for the UK railways and the SECAS system for the UK nuclear industry. CASP/HFAL are also involved in Human Factors work for Rolls Royce, Unilever and British Aerospace. They are also involved in classified work under the Official Secrets Act.

John Davies is also a member of the special Health Board, Quality Improvement Scotland, the NHS 24 Review Group and a number of other health-related committees. He is also Editor-in-Chief of Addiction Research & Theory journal.
