Extending your student visa
Check the ‘Valid until’ date on the Entry Clearance Certificate (visa) in your passport. It is extremely important that you do not let your visa expire. If you do, you could be considered as being an ‘overstayer’ and you could be asked to leave the
Start the visa renewal process about six weeks before the expiry date of your visa. When you collect your Application Form from the International and Graduate Office we will give you some helpful notes which will assist you to fill out the form correctly. They also outline what documents need to accompany your application. These include:
- Your passport
- Your Police Registration Certificate (if you have one)
- Two passport sized photographs taken against a cream or light grey background and which have been taken within one month of submitting your application. See guidelines www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk
- A letter from your Course Coordinator, Adviser of Studies, Academic Supervisor or Registry (if you are just starting a course of study) which includes the following information: , the name of your course, start date and end date of the course, that you are attending and making satisfactory progress.
- ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme) Certificate if you require one for the course you are following see www.fco.gov.uk. More information is available on the University’s Registry website www.strath.ac.uk/registry/atas/
- Bank statements for the three month period immediately prior to the date you submit your application. These should be originals and have been sent to your
- If you are receiving a scholarship or an allowance from an Official Financial Sponsor e.g. HM Government, your home government , the British Council, an international organisation, company or university, they must provide a letter stating how much they will pay for tuition fees and living costs and for how long they will sponsor you.
The University’s International Student Advisers, Jim Wilson and Melanie Fariss, check application forms every Wednesday morning between 9am and 12 noon. No appointment is necessary, just bring your completed form and accompanying documents.
The Advisers will send your application to UKBA to be considered by the Student Batch scheme. The processing time for postal applications is currently 6 – 8 weeks.

The International and Graduate Office will give you only one copy of the PBS Dependant Application Form. You will have to photocopy this for every additional dependant.
