Strathcloud User Accounts, Explained

main content

There are three different types of user-account on Strathcloud :

  • Employee accounts” (mainly staff, and post-grad researchers).

  • Client accounts” (most other users with a University DS account, e.g. undergrads, PGTs, and limited-access accounts).

  • On-the-fly accounts” (i.e. accounts created on-the-fly by the Strathcloud system itself, for users with no University DS account).

These terms do not necessarily mean what you might think!  For example, a person may have an “employee account” without being an employee of the University, and a person may have a “client account” without being, in any sense, a “client” of the University.

So, who gets what kind of account?

If you have a “DS account” (i.e. a University-issued account of any kind), then on Strathcloud you will have either an “employee account” or a “client account”, depending on what kind of DS account you have (see table below).  If you have never been given a “DS account”, but you have been sent a link to a file on Strathcloud by another Strathcloud user, then you will probably have an “on-the-fly account”.  See the table below for more details :

Note that all types of client account can be “promoted” to employee accounts, on request to the Helpdesk by any member of staff.

I’m still not sure what kind of Strathcloud account I have, how can I check?

First, open the Strathcloud web interface.

If you have never been given a DS account :

As described above, you may have an “on-the-fly account", if another Strathcloud user has sent you a link to a file.  In that case, to log in, you need to click on the small “on-the-fly” link on the web interface, then log in with your email address and Strathcloud password.  Do not click on the “on-the-fly” link if you have a DS account!

If you have a DS account :

  • Click the large “Login” button on the Strathcloud web interface.

  • Log in with your DS username and password as instructed – remember to put “DS\” in front of your username!

  • If you have an employee account, then you will see links at the top-left to “My Files and Folders”, “Shared Folders” and “Favorite Folders”.  Along the top, you will see links to “Home”, “Share”, “Request”, “My Settings” and “Apps”.

  • If you have a client account, then you will only see links at the top-left to “Shared Folders” and “Favorite Folders” – but not “My Files and Folders”.  Along the top, you will only see links to “Home”, “My Settings” and “Apps” – but not “Share” and “Request”.  You will also see this layout if you have an "on-the-fly account".

OK, so, what are the differences between the three types of Strathcloud account?

“Employee accounts” have the full set of features, “client accounts” have less, and “on-the-fly accounts” have less again, as described in the table below :
