The bulk of the language teaching delivered at Strathclyde is undertaken by Staff from the Language Learning Centre (LLC), Currently French, Spanish, Italian and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) are taught by staff within the LLC.

In terms of the Centre’s modern languages teaching, students are able to study any two of the three languages which are available, or any one language can be combined with a range of other subjects. Also students are able to study for the BA in International Business and a Modern Language offered by Strathclyde Business School. This course combines business studies with one of the languages currently offered.

A key feature of these language classes is their emphasis on high-level professional skills, such as making presentations, writing reports, interpreting and translating into English, all of which prepare students for a wide range of future careers. These skills are taught through innovative teaching methods using modern equipment available in the Language Centre as well as a web-based learning environment. Students also have a variety of opportunities to learn about important aspects of the cultures of other countries in language classes, in specialised cultural classes focussing on the countries where these languages are spoken, and in intercultural classes where students have the chance to broaden their knowledge even further.  These cultural or intercultural elements are taught mainly by colleagues from the Centre for Translation and Intercultural Studies.

While the teaching staff in the LLC very clearly understand the value of traditional face-to-face teaching, we are also committed to the use of modern technology through the use of computer-assisted learning, a web-based learning environment, foreign-language television, CD-ROMs and audiovisual devices. Student Working in Language Centre Students are able to undertake essential further language study in the recently refurbished Language Centre. These innovative approaches to learning and teaching complement the lectures and the small-group teaching. Assessment for these classes involves a mixture of coursework and final examination.

Honours students are normally required to spend one year abroad. They can exploit this year abroad to gain work experience, teach as an assistant in a school, or attend a university abroad as an exchange student. For many of our languages students, the year abroad is a really rewarding experience and a wonderful way, not only of exploiting and enhancing their language skills, but also of acquiring invaluable work experience.

As of session 2011/12 the Language Learning Centre will take over the teaching for language courses – Arabic, Mandarin, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Gaelic, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish – currently taught by staff from the Centre for Lifelong Learning (CLL).
