Part time Lecturer - BITS

Professor Colin teaches two modules of the USGSB BITS programme

  • Basic Information Technology Skills.

In his early life Professor Colin lectured at Birkbeck College (University of London) and at the University of Lancaster. In 1970 he was appointed Professor of Computer Science at Strathclyde University, and headed a team developing undergraduate courses in what was then a new subject. In research he was active in computer language and operating systems design.

In 1983 he stepped down as Head of Department and started a commercial company to exploit some of the technology developed in the Department. He retained links with the University, giving lecture courses on various topics.

From 1996 Professor Colin has lectured part-time at the Graduate School of Business. His experience in the academic and industrial worlds gives him a wide perspective. As visiting professor, he participates in the design and delivery of new courses and syllabuses.

Professor Colin also lectures at the Institute of System Level Integration. This is an institution for post-graduate teaching and research in Micro-electronics, operated jointly by the universities of Edinburgh, Herriot-Watt, Glasgow and Strathclyde.

Professor Colin has published some 12 textbooks on various aspects of Computer Science. Some have been translated into many languages. He has also written numerous papers in his subject. He is a co-inventor of the Binary Tree, a standard data structure widely used in many types of computer software.
