Shima Barakat obtained her PhD from the Department of Management in the area of Corporate Environmentalism where she researched perceptions of corporate environmental values and their implications for corporate strategy. Her research includes exploring personal values and how they interact with this perception. Her research methods are qualitative and recognise the human interaction that takes place in the research. As a side interest she is also starting to be involved in gender issues and has written about the role of women in development and higher education. Stemming from this interest, Shima was involved in creating the diversity group of the Graduate Business School.

Shima also teaches, on the MBA programme, and undergraduates in both the engineering and business faculties. In this capacity she was involved in designing two courses, Entrepreneurial Finance and Sustainable Entrepreneurship.

Before coming to Strathclyde she did some freelance work both for governments (Egypt and Germany) as well as small business. She was also the Assistant General Manager for PRIME- TÜV Rheinland in Egypt, providing ISO 14000 certification services, and taught at the American University in Cairo.
