The duration of the BA single or joint Honours degree is four years. Students have the option of graduating with a BA Pass degree after three years. Management can be taken as a Principal Subject in combination with any other Business School subject.
The introductory class, Foundations of Management, considers the practice of contemporary management and the ways in which organisations have evolved. The intention is to understand the challenges facing today's managers by introducing a range of essential concepts and to equip you with the skills to think critically about management. You will also study the Business School's Management Development Programme in Years 1, 2 and 3
Students take three core classes in Management:
- Understanding Organisations
- Exploring Corporate Strategy
- Management Decision-making
As a set, these classes build on the foundations class and develop key insights into organisation theory and strategic management.
Having established the basic vocabulary and grammar of the subject during Years 1 and 2, this year covers three further classes:
- Management in the New Global Economy
- Leadership
- Ethics in Modern Business
By this point, students will have a sophisticated understanding of management, the key challenges faced by managers and the essential skills required by successful managers.
In the Honours year, students select from a range of specialist electives in areas such as:
- Strategy Dynamics and Change
- Advanced Organisational Analysis
- Critical Management
- Managing Collaborations
- Crosscultural Management
- Public Sector Management
- Managing Diversity
There is also a General Paper and the opportunity to write a Dissertation on a subject of your own choosing.

The management degree is designed to produce high calibre graduates capable of making a positive contribution in a range of different settings and we are confident that graduates will be in high demand. You are as likely to find yourself working in a small, privately-owned company as you are to work in a large multinational, the public sector or perhaps even in your own business. The breadth of opportunities that you will be qualified for is a real benefit of the management degree.
Management can also be taken as a business subject in the following degree courses, offered by the Strathclyde Business School. For details about these courses, please refer to separate leaflets and the current Prospectus.
