Jill's research in the area of operations management focuses mainly on design and manufacturing performance. Current research is centred around high value manufacturing and in particular how organisations move into high value activities. She is currently leading a project for the Scottish Manufacturing Advisory Service, working with colleagues Bititici and Mendibil (DMEM) and Paton (Dept Mgt) which is investigating the future of manufacturing in Scotland. This project, along with the associated High Value Roundtable aims to inform policy on manufacturing in Scotland. This project complements the EPSRC Manufacturing Futures grant on which Jill is also Principal Investigator. Jill also collaborates with colleagues in the universities of Cambridge, Nottingham, Loughborough and Dundee, on an EPSRC/AHRC project looking a measuring Design Performance at a national level.  To date she has secured seven EPSRC grants and been involved in the management of five TCS programmes and four KTP projects.

She is Director of Research for the Institute, responsible for setting direction of this research grouping, managing research and consultancy projects, developing and launching a Doctoral Programme in Operations Management and mentoring researchers.

Jill has edited two special editions of journals in this field, had a key role in organising an international conference, (EurOMA 2006 in Glasgow), and an international workshop (for the IFIP Sig Group), and chaired numerous conference tracks, on design and manufacturing performance (eg.
