Infomation for Parents
Strathclyde is known as the ‘ Friendly University’ and our Department takes particular pride in the care we offer our students. As soon as a student expresses an interest in coming to study with us, we think of them as new members of our academic community. The application and interview process we have developed in the Department is regarded as second to none, and has been widely imitated: we try to keep applicants informed at all stages of the process of selecting, and then joining us. Parents are invited to visit the Department during the interview process, and indeed at any time (just contact Dr Donald MacKenzie, the Head of Department, the Academic Selector, Dr Jim Wood or Schools Liaison, Dr David Nash).
Our First Year curriculum was designed to make the change from school to university as easy as possible. We have introduced innovative teaching methods in order to achieve this: for example all students work in the same peer group in most classes during the First Year, and we have a friendly induction program so students can meet their groups and participate in team-building exercises. Our drop-out rate amongst First Year students is much smaller than the average.
Most of our staff have (or will have!) experience of sending their family to University and do appreciate the needs of the parents of our students as they become independent adults in our care.
The University of Strathclyde has been rated the best university in the UK when it comes to impressing students.
The Times Higher Education Supplement asked 10,000 first-year undergraduates to reflect on their experiences during the application process and how they perceived their university in 10 categories. Overall, Strathclyde had more top 20 mentions than any other institution and was in the top 10 in four.
