Modern Languages

main content

We teach three languages - French, Spanish and Italian. You can combine any two of these three languages, or you can combine one of them with a wide range of other subjects. In addition, you can take one of the languages we offer in combination with business subjects for the BA in International Business and a Modern Language offered by Strathclyde Business School.

Modern Languages are taught in the Centre for Translation and Intercultural Studies (CTIS) and the Language Learning Centre (LLC). CTIS is responsible for the cultural studies teaching and has principal responsibility for language teaching at Honours level. LLC has responsibility for language teaching at first to third year levels, with an input at Honours level.

A key feature of courses at Strathclyde is our emphasis on high level professional skills, such as making presentations, writing reports, interpreting and translating into English, which will equip you for a wide range of future careers working with your language(s). You will also have a variety of opportunities to learn about important aspects of the cultures of other countries. You will be able to do this in your language classes, in specialised cultural classes focussing on the countries whose language(s) you are studying, or in intercultural classes offering you the chance to broaden your knowledge even further.
