Promarc Summer School Participants

Fourth year student, Scott Dyer from the Department recently attended a Summer School on CFD Hydrodynamics at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Spain. This five day Summer School was organised as part of a FP7 project named PROMARC (Promoting Marine Research Careers) which the Department is currently participating in. PROMARC aims to raise awareness of job opportunities in the marine transport technology sector in Research and Innovative product development.

The objectives of the course were to provide a practical introduction to the use of CFD codes in Engineering, mainly on hydrodynamics. The course helped to build upon some of the knowledge Scott had learned during his forth year studies.

Students acquired skills in modelling and meshing 3D geometrics which they used to run panel method codes for the computation of the potential flow around a body and finite element codes for the computation of viscous flows. Participating students were introduced to programmes such as GiD, Matlab and STAR-CCM+ during the week.

Scott commented, “It was a fantastic experience and I would not hesitate to attend a similar course in the future given the opportunity. I met lots of great people of various nationalities who I will definitely be keeping in touch with. Madrid is a wonderful city to visit.”

Several other activities have been organised through the project including a Thematic Workshop on Sailing in May similarly held at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid
which was attended by three other students from the Department.
