The University of Strathclyde’s Institute of Photonics (IoP: www.photonics.ac.uk) is an internationally leading research centre undertaking commercially oriented research in areas including solid-state lasers, semiconductor materials and devices, and biophotonics.
Applications are invited for the post of Research Associate in the IoP working with Dr.Jennifer Hastiein the area of visible and UV semiconductor disk lasers (SDLs, also known at VECSELs). The main aim of this project is to design and engineer short wavelength SDLs for high coherence operation and to develop precision optical engineering systems around these laser sources. Interference lithography, spectroscopy, and metrology systems are all targeted and it is anticipated that the work will lead to significant advances in capability for each of these applications and trigger further collaborative research projects beyond the initial appointment. The successful applicant will be expected to work as part of a team of other postdoctoral researchers and students at the Institute of Photonics. The appointment is for 24 months initially, funded by an EPSRC grant titled ‘Ultra-precision optical engineering with short-wavelength semiconductor disk laser technology’.
Candidates should hold a PhD in laser physics and experience of laser engineering and laser stabilization techniques is essential coupled with a proven ability to write and publish high quality research papers. The successful applicant will have strong communication skills that will assist them in both the presentation of research findings at conferences and seminars and the supervision of students. Knowledge of nonlinear optics and laser spectroscopy and a publications record in a relevant field would be advantageous.
