Joe McCaughey MBE

main content

Joseph Daniel McCaughey MBE is currently retired but used to work in in the space industry and graduated in Applied Physics at Strathclyde in 1964

I chose Applied Physics because it had more fundamental depth than Mechanical Engineering, which was my alternative choice. I was lucky to have the opportunity to study at Strathclyde and my physics base allowed me to approach consequent technology challenges on a deeper and broader front. It also allowed elements of projects to be separated as necessary and the use of alternate routes of thinking to achieve more solutions with better operating margins.

As can be seen below I ended up close to engineering. Nevertheless, engineering requires good physics and mathematics input. Consequently, in the various positions I held, I gathered a significant number of Physics and Mathematics graduates into the teams. This produced very sound results and the success was very satisfying.

At present I am a qualified retired person doing as I wish. I enjoy golf (I was Captain of Waterlooville GC in 1990) Music, Art, Gardening and Investment/Economics. Being known to three as "Granddad Joe" I have plenty to do.
