Methods and Assessment
How will I be taught?
The modular nature of the classes open up a range of teaching practices. Our teaching is based on lectures, tutorials, workshops, laboratory experiments, and research projects, which aim to develop confident and motivated independent learners who can tackle a diverse range of problems. Within the lectures staff use Personal Response Systems for in-lecture quizzes. To support the material used in lectures many staff make use of online resources. For example the text book used in 1st and 2nd Year Physics for Scientists and Engineers with Modern Physics (ISBN-10: 1-4390-4875-4) has an online assessment / question bank facility that the lecturers use to support and augment the questions given in tutorials.
How will I be assessed?
Depending on the nature of the individual classes taken each year, assessment is by formal examination, continuous assessment or a combination of both. In the first two years of the course, students can gain the credits for a class through suitable performance in workshop tutorials and lecture class tests without having to sit the exam.
