Dragons leave den for Strathclyde Enterprise Awards

High-flying entrepreneurs from the University of Strathclyde came face-to-face with the stars of BBC Dragons' Den Online at an awards ceremony in Glasgow this week.

Some of the winners at the 2009 Enterprise Awards The Strathclyde Enterprise Awards 2009 recognised students, staff and graduates for their entrepreneurial achievements, from starting up companies to developing bright new business ideas.

More than 180 people attended the ceremony at Glasgow's Old Fruitmarket, hosted by Dragons' Den online presenter and BBC Radio one newsreader Dominic Byrne. The event, which coincided with Global Enterprise Week, also included a keynote speech from Dragon and Strathclyde alumnus, Shaf Rasul.

Among those recognised were bioengineer Professor Patricia Connolly and colleagues, who founded the University's newest spin-out company, Ohmedics Limited. The healthcare firm was set up to commercialise an award-winning wound monitoring technology, which could save health services thousands of pounds in unnecessary dressings and minimise patient discomfort.

Also on the roll of honour were the University's four Enterprise Fellows, who successfully bid for support from Scottish Enterprise and the Royal Society of Edinburgh to help commercialise their new products and services. All of the Fellows receive training at Strathclyde's Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship.

Awards were presented to members of the University's vibrant enterprise community by some of Strathclyde's most high-profile alumni, including top businessmen Sir Tom Hunter and Jim McColl.

Professor Jim McDonald, Principal of the University Professor Jim McDonald, Principal of the University, said: "It is with great pleasure that we celebrate the achievements of our entrepreneurial students, staff and alumni. It is particularly fitting that our second Enterprise Awards ceremony should be held during Global Enterprise Week.

"Strathclyde has an impressive track record of supporting and encouraging enterprise activity and this is reflected in the high quality of the nominations received. Our winners include both early-stage and well-established entrepreneurs and businesses, from a diverse range of sectors from life sciences to energy. But regardless of academic discipline, they all share the ambition and entrepreneurial drive to make a difference.

"Industrial relevance is a defining characteristic of Strathclyde, and we are proud that our world-class research and excellent graduates are making a positive impact on both society and the wider economy."

The awards were organised by Strathclyde Entrepreneurial Network, which supports students and alumni of the University in business creation, business growth and the development of new product ideas.

The ceremony also revealed the winners of the Network's Enterprise Challenge competition, which was open to all University alumni.

  • Prithviraj Sarkar and Tafadzwa Mapfumo scooped the Creation Challenge award by developing the best business plan and outstanding pitch for their 'myPod' product - a security system for mobiles, MP3 players and other valuables

  • Padam Singh of Jagsons Marketing Communication Services won the Growth Challenge title for his outstanding promotional video

  • Brian O'Reilly won the Investment Challenge prize for his outstanding investor-ready business plan and pitch with his Energy Egg - a product which wirelessly switches off household appliances when they're not in use.
